90-year-old’s wish will help 1,000

After granting more than 1,000 wishes, Never Too Late is helping another man grant 1,000 wishes of his own.

This Saturday, July 29, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 90-year-old Lucious Newsom will distribute 1,000 bags of groceries to those in need at the corner of Elder and West New York streets in Indianapolis.

Newsom was a successful businessman and is a retired Baptist minister from Eastern Tennessee. Then he “got the call” to come to Indiana to “share God’s love” with the forgotten poor of Indianapolis. Now he is a converted Catholic, wearing his trademark bib overalls, as he works “for the Lord” more than 14 hours a day six days a week. He has been ministering to the poor in Indianapolis with a caring hands-on approach for the past 18 years. When Never Too Late asked him what wish he had, it was fitting that his only request was to help others.

He declared he wanted nothing for himself, but would appreciate any help he could get for the folks he reaches out to on a regular basis. Newsom asked if Never Too Late would be willing to help feed the people he serves day in and day out in Indy.

Since Never Too Late had just reached the 1,000-wish mark after six and a half years in existence, Newsom was excited about the prospect of gathering 1,000 bags of groceries. He charged Never Too Late with collecting the food, saying he could distribute it if we could bring it.

Tharp Investments got on board early by donating office space to store the more than 13,000 items that will be placed in the grocery bags. Tharp Investments also contacted Kraft Foods and that benevolent company donated 1,000 boxes of cereal and 1,000 boxes of macaroni and cheese. Tharp also brought Astbury Environmental Engineering to the table with a $1,000 donation for groceries.

Aldi Foods donated some cans of corn and green beans. US Food Service took care of a 1,000 cans of peas. The Waters long term care centers and Miller’s Senior Living came up with some peanut butter and more cans of corn and green beans. American Senior Communities brought Klosterman’s Bakery to the party with 1,000 loaves of fresh bread, which will be delivered on the day of the event. A dozen or so compassionate citizens sent checks to buy more groceries for the BHAG wish.

But the wish really came to fruition after Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Centers came to the rescue with a $4,000 donation. This generous donation allowed the final pieces of the puzzle to be put in place - the last of the needed grocery items have been ordered and will be ready to bag by July 28.

It is a rare occasion when two not for profit charitable organizations can partner to touch the lives of more than 1,000 people simultaneously. Please join all the volunteers with the Lord’s Panty and Never Too Late as they receive a “blessing” by being involved with such a moment Saturday.
