New Palestine High School Charity Event Will Benefit the Never Too Late
The New Palestine High School Business Department will be conducting their seventh annual “NP-Bay” online charity auction during the months of February, March, April and May. This year the online charity auction will benefit Never Too Late. Never Too Late's primary purpose is to reach out to people in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospice programs and adult day care facilities - regardless of age - and help make their dreams and wishes come true.
The NPHS online auction is an annual event that involves over 200 Computer Application students and several teachers. Over the past six years, the NP-Bay auction has raised over $20,000 for local charities. The project involves creating and sending over 2,800 letters to various college and professional athletic programs asking for t-shirts, jerseys and other various memorabilia for the auction.
Students begin the project by researching various charitable organizations and presenting their findings to the class. The classes then vote on the charity that will benefit from the auction. Students then use a variety of computer applications to complete the project. They use word processing skills to create mailing labels and personalized form letters. They use the Internet to find addresses, zip codes and official team names. Students also use a spreadsheet program to track and chart the team responses.
Finally, an advanced computer class creates and maintains the web page where all the items are auctioned. The name of the website is NP-Bay, a take-off on the popular online auction site E-Bay. The website is easy to navigate and bidding instructions are simple. Choose an item, e-mail your bid, get some cool merchandise and support a good cause!
The first round of items are up for bid! Each round of the auction will last one week and the auction will continue through May. Over 300 items will be auctioned off during the next three months.
