Norm Stinson Flies the 'Yankee Stinson'

By Ray Hunter, Yankee Air Force

Thursday, August 29, 2006

Norm Stinson is shown at the controls of the Yankee Stinson V-77 Reliant.

BELLEVILLE, MI: Norman Stinson, Jr. is 76 years young and lives in Belleville, MI and as far as he knows, does not have any family connections to Eddie Stinson, who founded the Stinson Aircraft Company. He actually owned and flew his own Stinson in the 60s.

Norm grew up in the Detroit area and is a retired tool-and-die maker. He heard about the Yankee Air Force Stinson V-77 Reliant and wanted to get a ride. His daughter Anita, who lives in South Carolina, heard about a foundation called Never Too Late that provides funding to grant wishes to seniors. Anita applied to the Foundation for a grant to buy a YAF membership for her father and make him eligible for a ride in the gull-winged Reliant.

Never Too Late provided a check to the Yankee Air Force that paid for Norman's one-year membership and a one-hour flight in the Stinson. Norm's flight took place on the 29th of August. Norm had a fantastic time during the flight and talked a lot about his flying experiences in the Luscombe and the Stinson that he once owned.  Norm did a great job keeping the Stinson straight and level and was all smiles at the end of the flight.
